Identifying and indexing icosahedral quasicrystals from powder diffraction patterns.

We present a scheme to identify quasicrystals based on powder diffraction data and to provide a standardized indexing. We apply our scheme to a large catalog of powder diffraction patterns, including natural minerals, to look for new quasicrystals. Based on our tests, we have found promising candidates worthy of further exploration.

Pinwheel patterns and powder diffraction

Pinwheel patterns and their higher dimensional generalisations display continuous circular or spherical symmetries in spite of being perfectly ordered. The same symmetries show up in the corresponding diffraction images. Interestingly, they also arise from amorphous systems, and also from regular crystals when investigated by powder diffraction. We present first steps and results towards a gene...

New methods for indexing multi-lattice diffraction data

A new indexing method is presented which is capable of indexing multiple crystal lattices from narrow wedges of diffraction data. The method takes advantage of a simplification of Fourier transform-based methods that is applicable when the unit-cell dimensions are known a priori. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated with both semi-synthetic multi-lattice data and real multi-lattice data ...

X-ray Powder Diffraction Pattern Indexing for Pharmaceutical Applications

Crystal-structure determination using X-ray diffraction from single crystals is a well-developed technique (1). A single crystal structure provides full structural characterization of the form at the atomic scale. The main drawback to single crystal diffraction is the need to grow a sufficiently large and defect-free crystal for analysis, which is not practical for all crystal forms. Furthermor...

The use of net analyte signal orthogonalization in the separation of multi-component diffraction patterns obtained from X-ray powder diffraction of intact compacts.

X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis of intact multi-component consolidated mixtures has significant potential owing to the ability to non-destructively quantify and discriminate between solid phases in composite bodies with minimal sample preparation. There are, however, limitations to the quantitative power using traditional univariate methods on diffraction data containing features from ...
